The big picture
Workplace mental health challenges are rising across all industries, with workers demonstrating:
32.3%
Increased levels of anxiety and stress
32.3% of adults reported symptoms of anxiety or depression in February 2023¹
Decreased levels of productivity
Worker productivity is declining at the fastest rate in 75 years²
2.6x
Higher turnover rates due to burnout
Employees who say they very often or always experience burnout at work are 2.6x as likely to be actively seeking a different job³
Meeting the growing demand for easier access to behavioral health services is crucial to driving down the impacts of lost productivity and high turnover rates for any organization.
For employees, finding a trusted mental health provider in a reasonable amount of time and navigating the care process can seem both daunting and confusing.
Here's how a typical care journey might look for an employee trying to navigate and access behavioral health support:
1
Michael uses a search engine to locate a mental health provider. He finds a therapist, but they don't accept insurance.
2
After more searching and calling, he locates a therapist who does accept insurance but doesn’t have an appointment for three months. Another therapist has availability, but their office is a long way from Michael's work and home.
3
Still another therapist is close by, but only has appointments on weekday afternoons, which conflicts with Michael's work schedule. After reading discussions online, he isn’t sure whether he needs talk therapy or antidepressants (or both).
4
After weeks with no resolution in sight, Michael gives up. As his burnout worsens, so does his performance at work.
This process can often be long and confusing — and for someone already needing support, it can feel frustrating and fruitless.
It doesn't have to be.

A better journey
Sara is a working parent, and has been experiencing increased signs of burnout-related stress since the pandemic. This burnout has resulted in more frequent absences than usual, which is beginning to take its toll on her performance at work. Recently, her spouse and 14-year-old son have started to show signs of anxiety as well. Sara knows she and her family need help, but she’s struggling to learn where to turn for help.
She's connected with a licensed telephonic clinician and is relieved to know she's not alone in experiencing feelings of burnout.
The clinician recommends finding a therapist to talk to and offers to help find a local provider appointment for Sara or to help Sara locate a provider via the online app.
Sara logs into myCigna.com and completes a guided digital assessment.
After completing the assessment, she's able to view available options, which include searching for virtual in-network providers, navigating additional digital tools and resources, and connecting via phone or click-to-chat. Sara uses the click-to-chat feature, and she's connected with a care navigator who listens to her concerns and helps her figure out what options are available to her.
Sara decides to find a therapist on the myCigna app, which considers factors including her age, why she’s seeking therapy, and the type of therapy she’s looking for.
She’s able to select her preference of virtual or in-person care delivery options — and matches with a therapist who has available appointments, right from her mobile phone.
Throughout her journey, Sara's clinical navigator continues to reach out to check on her progress and encourages her to voice any concerns, so she feels supported and connected.
Sara notices that her symptoms gradually begin to improve with therapy, and she becomes more engaged and productive at work
