Sometimes the signs of developmental delays are subtle. Sometimes not so much. But the truth is, you know your child better than anyone. So if you have a sinking feeling that something’s not quite right, it’s important to do all that you can, as soon as you can. Because addressing delays early can make a world of difference.
Cigna Healthcare is right beside you, to help you face the road ahead of you.
MILESTONE MARKERS
While each child may grow and develop differently, experts suggest parents and guardians pay attention to common developmental milestones as guidance on how their child is doing.
By 2 Months
Smiles at you, coos, pays attention to faces
6 Months
Laughs with you, responds to their name
1 Year
Imitates sounds, points, enjoys peekaboo
2 Years
Plays beside other children, says 2-4 words together
3 Years
Shows affection, plays make-believe, can name familiar things
4 1/2 Years
Enjoys doing new things, plays well with other children
As we said, you know your child best. So if you feel they’re not meeting the milestones they should, talk to your pediatrician.
THE SOONER THE BETTER
Experts agree the first three years are the most important building blocks of a child’s future.1
Early intervention services and support can have a long-term positive impact on your child later in life.2
Most parents/guardians who discover their child needs professional help with their development often wish they accessed resources sooner. So listen to your gut. Reach out for support and speak to your pediatrician today.
A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
There are childhood development experts whose job it is to evaluate young children and determine whether they need intervention services to help them reach their full potential. These evaluations generally start with a screening questionnaire. From there, your child will be observed in how they play, communicate and manage simple tasks, such as stacking blocks or completing a puzzle. This can either lead to a diagnosis or help put your mind at ease. To schedule a professional evaluation, tell your child’s doctor that you have some concerns about their development.
No referrals are needed.
HELPING YOUR CHILD THRIVE
Your pediatrician may recommend additional evaluation to inform treatment options. One example of an evaluation that may be recommended is psychological testing. This is performed by a psychologist or another health care professional.
After your child receives an evaluation, and possibly a diagnosis, now what? There are a number of therapies that can support your child and family. Speak to your pediatrician about what services would benefit your child most. Our advocates are also here to help guide you to resources covered under your plan.
